“All little girls should be told they are pretty, even if they aren't.” A quote from a famous actress named Marilyn Monroe. She was hired in most movies because of her body figure and preferred over others because of the color of her hair. Years later after she died she is still remembered as one of the most beautiful women that has ever acted or modeled. She is a remodel for many despite the fact that she killed herself with a drug overdose. In the 20th century, there has been a huge impact of beauty that women “must” have in order to be considered beautiful. Dieting and cosmetics are some things women abide by in order to think good of themselves. This has led to many problems with in America such as anorexia, bulimia and many health problems that are applied to the face when women put on make up.
It is estimated that 8 million Americans have an eating disorder – seven million women and one million men. Only about 10% of people with anorexia and bulimia are male. This gender difference may reflect our society's different expectations for men and women. Men are supposed to be strong and powerful. They feel ashamed of skinny bodies and want to be big and powerful. Women, on the other hand, are supposed to be tiny, waif-like, and thin. They diet to lose weight, making themselves vulnerable to binge eating. Some develop rigid and compulsive over control. These are people who try to fit into the this category so that people can say they are beautiful. Bulimia is harmful to one’s body no matter how old or what gender. Although their ultimate goal is to be thin, bulimia also has its unwanted effects too. Bulimia can cause tooth decay, ruptured stomach or esophagus, acid reflux, chronic constipation, broken blood vessels in the eyes, chronic sore throat, etc. People with a bulimic disability can eventually die because of everything that bulimia causes. They are dying because they are trying to be what other people consider as beautiful. They are dying from words that hurt them. This is effecting America’s youth because they think they have to live up to these expectations to be so thin that you have no body fat at all when really, body fat is healthy. Having meat on your body is very essential because your body needs minerals in order to function right. If not then your body can eventually break down and then does not respond leading to death. There has been several deaths in young girls because they are brainwashed to being thin. This is effecting everyone in America.
Over two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight or obese, and over one-third are obese. These are the people who are considered “ugly”. Some people do not have a choice and it may be a health condition. Others, yes it is their fault for being overweight or obese but should they be considered ugly just because they do not fit the definition that society has made for being beautiful? No. This should not be a reason to not be beautiful. Overweight people have their reasons for being overweight and no one knows for sure what their reason is. Therefore no judgement should be placed on them. It is their own body and they should not feel bad because of their weight. This causes some to commit suicide, become bulimic or anorexic and go into a depression or go on an extreme diet that their body cannot take leading their body to a withdraw. This too is dangerous for the body and can send their body into cardiac arrest which in most cases leads to death if not found in time. Beauty means everything to some people and if they cannot achieve it then they do crazy things that will make them feel better. For two-thirds of our country being overweight, you would think there would be a more positive encouragement to lose weight in a healthy way because of how many Americans suffer from the same problem but there is not. There is more envy because of it. Overweight people do feel discouraged and uncomfortable when they are around skinnier people because of it. Some do wish to be as skinny as the standards say you must be but others do not. Either way, this affects a large part of America and it needs to stop. Overweight does not mean that a person is ugly.
One-third of women will not leave their house without makeup on. Makeup has many affects on the skin such as skin cancer and allergic reactions. Makeup can cause acne. Certain oils in many cosmetics can cause or worsen acne which is why many consumers of cosmetics buy these products so they can hide their acne. This happens because it blocks pores and reddened bumps on the chin, cheeks and forehead. Acne cosmetica occurs when oils from your makeup collect in and clog your pores, so thick liquid or cream products are more often culprits than are lighter products like powders. this produces more acne causing more products being bought. The makeup not only covers acne but also causes it. There is a scale and it rates products based on a 1 to 10 level. 1 being the lowest risk, and 10 being the highest when it comes to your health. It turns out Cover Girls Fantastic Lash High Volume is a level 8 high risk mascara. This is a mascara that can be bought by anyone regardless of age. This means that little girls can start applying cancerous products to themselves and not even know it. Starting off at a young age can cause addictions to many products. This means that they will be applying this cancerous product to their faces for a long time which will affect their skin in the long run. A quick list of the most common chemical are listed on a website. Most are cancerous and no one cares to read the warning label because they are so determined to look beautiful rather than care about their health. Not only in makeup but also in hair care products. Two out of every five females in America dye their hair. Researches have found that dyeing hair with chemicals can be the cause of cancer. The chemicals are being applied straight to your scalp which is the most sensitive part of your body and it is closest to your brain. Why would you put cancerous chemicals on your head in the first place? Lead is a high toxic metallic element and very harmful for human body. In the chemical and paint industry lead is used in the production system. Lead acetate is used in most leading hair dyers. This lead acetate is very harmful for any internal use and that is why ‘Caution’ or ‘Warning’ label is written on the packet of hair dyeing product. Applying a product to your body with a caution or warning sign on the label is not a smart thing to do yet millions of people do it every day.
This is a major problem because everyone in America is being opened to these diseases and cancerous items yet the warning lables are not big enough and there is no age limit to when you can start buying them. This effects many of American's health and nothing is being done about it other then more and more products being produced so that this can keep happening over and over again.
What needs to be done is parents need to restrict their children and in order for them to do this, they need to be aware of what is going on. By doing this, they will see what their children and themselves are being put through and then they will be able to make their own decision of what they want to do. No young child should be allowed to put a lot of make up on, go on a diet to lose weigh (unless they are extremely obease) or dye their hair in order to try and look "beautiful" or "hot". Beauty is not painted on, it os deep within and no one can make or break it other than yourself.
